DAT Prelims

  • Mode: Offline, pen & paper

  • Duration: 3 hours (B.Des), ~2.5 hours (M.Des)

  • Sections:

    • Part I: Objective / MCQs (GK, reasoning, aptitude)

    • Part II: Subjective questions (creativity, drawing, design problems)

  • Total Marks: 100

  • Language: English

DAT Mains

  • B.Des: Studio Test (hands-on design exercises, model making, creativity tasks)

  • M.Des: Studio Test + Interview (portfolio & domain knowledge tested)

  • Weightage:

    • B.Des → Prelims 40% + Mains 60%

    • M.Des → Prelims 30% + Mains 70%

What is NID & NID DAT ?

  • NID stands for National Institute of Design — India’s premier design institute offering B.Des and M.Des programs.

  • Admissions are through NID DAT (Design Aptitude Test).

  • The exam has two stages:

    1. Prelims (objective + subjective paper)

    2. Mains (studio test / interview)

  • Final admission is based on performance in both stages + category + seat availability.

Eligibility & Application

B.Des Eligibility

  • Must have passed or be appearing in 10+2 (any stream) from a recognized board.

M.Des Eligibility

  • Must hold a bachelor’s degree (any discipline) or equivalent.

  • Candidates choose one or two disciplines for M.Des.

Application Process

  • Apply online via NID admissions portal.

  • Fill personal & academic details, select program, upload documents, and pay fee.

  • Correction window usually opens after main application dates.

Cut-Offs & Good Score

  • NID cut-offs vary each year based on category, program, and seats.

  • A good score is usually well above average in both Prelims and Mains.

  • For B.Des, the Studio Test is highly important to secure top ranks.

  • For M.Des, performance in both Studio Test and Interview matters heavily.
